Warby Parker, Karlie Kloss, and Afam: Haskell I love you.

20:43:00

Hello people,

How's it going?

Today's going pretty well for me. I've laughed a lot. It's always good to laugh. Now, I've got to say something profoundly profound about laughter. It's a trick we bloggers/writers use all the time. If I were to start talking about beauty, I'd probably start of like this. I've heard it said that the 21st century has imposed a standard of beauty that is all but impossible, but I don't believe this. There's more to beauty than white teeth, sharp cheek bones, and symmetrical features. There is beauty in the sky, and the moon, and most smiles. The thing that makes a smile beautiful isn't the pearly teeth but the glimmer of genuine emotion that flashes across a face as its lips part. There is beauty in the neediness of Sam Smith, there is beauty in the smirk of Karlie Kloss and there is beauty in the common tragedy that life is. But, all of these things are things I find beautiful. Beauty is personal. Your eyes are yours and yours alone. Laughter is delightful because of the complete detachment that comes with it. When you laugh your head is clear. Laughter suspends reality for a heartbeat, and sometimes that's all you need.
I think a change of tone is necessary now. You may not know this about me, but I wear glasses. Sometimes, I love the fact that I'm bespectacled, and sometimes, I'm a little insecure about it. When I met G, University Crush number 3, I had my contacts in. It looked like things were going well, but we'd only just met so I was a little worried. When we went out on our first date I didn't want her to suddenly meet the bespectacled me and think, "I must have been drunker than I thought." Obviously, I'm not as insecure as I was then, life is far too short for that.

me
Getting a new pair of glasses can be a beastly experience. They're just so expensive! You can't scrimp on glasses because you wear them everyday. And even if you aren't fussed about how your frames frame your face, depending on your prescription, your lenses could be twice, or thrice as much as the frames themselves, so when I heard about Warby Parker I was very pleased indeed.

Warby Parker is a company that provides frames and lenses that don't leave your wallet skinny. In their words,

"Warby Parker was founded with a rebellious spirit and a lofty objective: to offer designer eyewear at a revolutionary price, while leading the way for socially conscious businesses."

And they've achieved this. You can get a pair of glasses with anti reflective prescription lenses for $95 and the frames are better than many so called designer frames. I'm not joking. Go give them a look see. They're also really keen on solving the seeing problems of the world. For every pair of glasses sold, they give a pair to someone in need. They've given a million pairs of glasses so far, and according to their estimates, the economic impact of this is $200,000,000. I believe it. Somewhere out there, there's a farmer who's killed off a couple of his prized crops because he couldn't see that they weren't weeds, and there's a child that'll change the world if he gets to see the blackboard in his/her classroom.
Anyway, Warby Parker have come up with a range of frames and sunshades for the summer that I really like. They even got Karly Kloss to design a couple of them. Each sale from the Karlie range will benefit a charity that's really dear to Karlie - Edible schoolyard NYC. They provide kitchens and gardens to low-income public schools, giving the students the tools to develop lifelong healthy habits.

The shades are stunning, and they're stunning on her. They're also unisex, which I think is great. Androgyny is kind of wicked isn't it?
Meet the Julias

I don't want to say anymore because when you praise something a little superfluously you come across as dishonest, or you'll start to think that they promised me something, and they didn't. I guess this is what they call vision capital. If your vision is great, you'll meet someone, or someone will meet you, and then they won't be able to shut up about you. I don't think I'll be able to shut up about them. #sorrynotsorry
Meet the Claras

Because I don't want to say anymore words, here are pictures. What's that? I've already used up all of the pictures? You don't mean it. I'm sorry, I didn't realise. Let's call it Afam product placement shall we?

I kid. Even though the frames are all great, there are three of them that I love. They're all named Haskell and they're perfect.

Yes! These three. They're me, and I'm sure that if you go through their website, you'll find you too.

 Happy Days,
Afam

ps. The frames, I'm wearing in the photo aren't Warby Parker frames. #justsaying

ps. Haskell call me.

psss. Haskell I love you

pssssss. Haskell I want to have your babies.

psssssss. Sorry to get your hopes up Haskell, I can't have babies. I have a penis.

Eventing: Caven Etomi + Kingdom Tees + Temple Muse + Afam

08:40:00

Okay, so it's official, I'm not the same as I was. It feels like I say this a lot. Maybe I say it too much, but no matter. As they say, the price of the fish in the market remains unchanged, and more appropriately, the money in my bank account has neither apprexcated nor depprexcated, so let's get on with it.

On Saturday, the something of July (psst. the 19th of July) I resumed my event whoring lifestyle. I can hear my pastor's voice in my head.

"Afam. Afam. Event whoring is bad for your soul."

"Pastor. Pastor. Everybody's a whore for something, and champagne is as good a thing as money, so show me the Dom!"

I went to the Kingdom Tees Pop Up launch event at Temple Muse.
That thing above this line is the instagram flyer that they used to promote the event. Truth be told I saw it, but I wasn't going to go. I've been warring with the whoring lifestyle. I mean I'm worth more than a Belvedere cocktail aren't I? Getting me to come should cost more than a bottle of fizz, or a chilled chapman right? I swear, I was going to give it a miss, but on Friday night I bumped into Ozzy Etomi, one of the girls behind the Kingdom Tee shirt brand and I made up my mind there and then that the universe was speaking to me.

"Afam, my dear boy" The Universe whispered softly.

"You know that you've been drooling over those Kingdom tees ever since they got Boss Lakin to shoot that dark dark skin against pink magenta wall campaign"
I was tensioned. It was true. I had been drooling. I am still drooling.

"And let's not forget the card brandishing frenzy you almost went into when you saw the Nsibidi Chief tees."
That too was true. I brandished my cards all the way to the dustbin. I struggle with self control. When I'm tempted, I lose my cards.

"GTB card, where are you? Stanbic's running dry"

I had lost both the battle and the war. Come Saturday, I knew where I would be. As I sipped my free glass of red wine out of a Coke pint glass, I planned my journey to Temple Muse and back by return of google maps.
Afropolitan Vibes. Mixed Crowd. Lagos haze. Afam daze.
Kingdom is an international street wear brand set up by Caven Etomi (an international fashion company). The brand designs and develops luxury street wear that shares little bits of Africa with the rest of the world. And they don't just share any bits of Africa, they share the good bits, like the history, the wealth, and the breadth of culture. It's a little bit of an Afrocentric brand, but it isn't Afrocentric in the way that many things or people are. If you aren't keen on checking your references then the nsibidi writing of the Ejegam people that makes its way unto a few of their tees is cool and tribal, and the Idia collection inspired by the infamous Queen Idia mask is just cool art on a tee (Maybe that last one is me reaching).
T shirts on the wall.
Here we've got my sweedest girl Oyinye, and Deji. Look out, cos she's just too sweed for words, and it's breaking my heart in two, she's got too much soul for me. I don't like it but it's true. I think I've used this song before. I need more references. :(

Latasha Ngwube and a friend. I can't believe I did the person and friend thing. :(. They had a selfie wall there. I thought it was pretty cool. I mean, it was as cool as a selfie wall can be, and I took a selfie and all, but you know, I'm a little bit tired of selfies. There are only so many times I can suck my cheeks in to give myself Olivier Rousteing like cheekbones.

Faridah, who's lovely. She's got this hard exterior that I haven't cracked yet. I'm sure I will in time. I'm nothing if not loveable.

Bidemi. I think she's inspiring, so when she said, "Afam I'm going to let you take my picture today." There were no complaints.

Deola Adebiyi, senior writer at Hello Nigeria, co-owner of the fashion blog, Omoge Ruwa, and fellow champagne trail trudger.

All poison is indeed poisonous, no matter how sweet, no matter how tart it is. But, the sweeter the poison, the greater the indulgence, toeing the line between the cliff and the fall. I toed the line like a pro that day.

She's wearing the Nsibidi Nigerian hairstyles tee. I quite like that one. It's neutral, and it would look great baggy. I'm into baggy clothes again.

Ozzy Etomi

This isn't a very quiet smile is it. The question I had for myself after speaking to her is, how long can you go talking to someone without letting them know that you can't remember their name? It's actually cowardly. Must aspire to be more gung ho about these things in the future.

And this my friends is some Kingdom art that you can own for N75,000. It isn't unreasonable you know? That's roughly £300. It seems like a fair deal to me.

If you're interested in any of this, or all of this, then click on this link right here http://www.cavenetomi.com/. It will take you to the world of Kingdom, and Caven. If you're in Nigeria, then Kingdom tees, and the two large paintings above can still be found in Temple Muse.

How to take care of your dog god alien man

14:29:00
Originally published on Bellanaija

Lesson 1:
Your man is not a man. He is a god. You must apply this lesson to all the other lessons that will follow this one. When things get a little bit bizarre, come back to our first lesson and remember, there’s nothing at all manly about your man.

Lesson 2:
Your man is a god, and you are not a woman, but woman. Your individuality has no meaning when it comes to looking after your man. There’s no personal trait you can offer him. You must be bland and gentled. You must kill your soul. Your personality is of no consequence. If you think you’re an Ifemmelu or an Elizabeth Bennet, you better domesticate yourself, if not, that finger on your left hand will be barren forever. If the finger isn’t barren, then you must remember that no condition is permanent.

Lesson 3:
Your man is not only a god, but also a dog. It is tragically incapable of looking after itself. You must clean up after it, brush its hair, soothe its temper, and cuddle with it.

Lesson 4:
The name of the game is long suffering. You must suffer, and suffer, and suffer, and suffer, on behalf of your dog god man. If he cheats on you absorb it, it is his way. If he slaps you, why were you being such a stupid ho? Don’t you know that if you don’t talk right you are liable to be slapped? And isn’t a kiss with a kick* better than none?

Lesson 5:
Your god dog man’s words are gold to your ears. Every time he talks you must position your eyes and ears to catch every minute detail. God gave you two ears and one mouth for this purpose. Don’t get it twisted. Your views don’t matter. You shouldn’t even have views. Your views are your man’s views. You are a parrot. The chain of command is from your man’s brain to your pretty lips. If your man says that your father was born in a toilet and that Cancer is spread by flies and that periods are contagious, you better quote him without reservation.

Lesson 6:
Your man… I mean your god dog man, is like a Ken doll. All god dog men are equal. There is no difference between them. That’s why all the relationship advice you’ve been reading is gold. And that’s why you must never cheat. The next god man, will be exactly the same as the previous god man, so there’s really no point sleeping around. Furthermore, there are a million million other women who are dying (and I mean dying) to be in your shoes. If you cheat, your god man will kick you out, and replace you within the week.

Lesson 7:
Your family loves your god man more than they love you. If you mess up, get maltreated and go to your family to complain, your family will go to your god man to apologise on your behalf because you are worthless and valueless. Your value can only be measured by how much your man loves you.

Lesson 8:
If your family is peculiar and happens to love you more than your god man, do not tell them about your god man. They will wreck your marriage and return you to the curse and pestilence upon your soul that is singleness. You must be silent. They mustn’t know. They mustn’t hear a goddamn word from your lips about your man’s not so brilliant ways. Your man is a god, generous in his stinginess, and loving in his cruelty.

Lesson 9:
You have no desire. Your desire is your man’s desire. You must do it, whenever, if ever your man is ready, however he wants to do it, whichever way he wants to do it with and whatever he wants to do it with. This is the price you must pay, for this was the deal you made when you decided that you needed to have a dog god man to be happy.

Lesson 10:
If your husband strays from your bed, it is your fault. You were not hot enough. You did not keep it tight enough. You did not do him enough. You let yourself go. Even if you gained no weight, you lost your coquettish nature. You messed up. Yup, it’s all your fault. I’ll say it again. It’s all your fault.

Lesson 11:
Remember, your man is a dog god. You must praise him. Praise him, and pet him and praise him again. If you don’t the size of his ego will deflate and you will be unhappy because his ego is your happiness. Beyonce is happy because Jay Z has a very big ego. She said it in her song, Ego. If you do not fill his ego tank, he will go to the ego black market, and you know what that means don’t you? “Ekaete she done get belle oh”

Lesson 12:
Your dog god man is like a second hand car. If you do not need him he will spoil from lack of use. So you must need him like a drug addict. You must need him for everything. You are woman. You are useless. You cannot do anything without your man, so you must need him. Need him I say. If you do not need him, he will break down and crawl to the mechanic, where he will be picked up by someone who needs him more.

Lesson 13:
Your god dog man is perfect. He was perfect when he was born and he’ll be perfect when he dies. He can’t change. If he likes wearing red socks, he will never ever wear black socks, because that would be like asking a chicken to fly and chickens can’t fly. He can’t change so you must become a chameleon. Working woman by day, house girl in the evening, and sex worker by night. You can do it. The Lord is your strength.

Lesson 14:
Your dog god man isn’t just a god dog man, he is an alien. Yes. He is from Jupiter and you are from Pluto. Jupiter is the largest planet in out solar system and Pluto was the smallest when it was still a planet. Now, Pluto is only an ex planet. That is your place as woman in the grand scheme of things. So not only are you less than your dog god alien man, you must also be content with excuses from your girlfriends like, “It isn’t his fault! He’s not built the same as us” because they’re true.

Lesson 15:
Your man is a professional food critic and a glutton. Does your ogbono soup taste like it looks? Does your Ofe Nsala offend him more than it makes him say Shalala? Then your marriage, or your relationship is about to get rocky because he’s going to step in the name of his stomach to Mama Hooters. And we all know that that’s only the beginning don’t we. What? You’re thinking it’s not that bad… You’re thinking what happened to take out. Well, it seems that dog god alien men don’t do take out, because home cooked meals are EVERYTHING!

Now you could live by the rules above. God knows it’s possible, just as we all know it’s possible to find a man who really believes he’s a god dog alien man. But… wouldn’t that be such a pitiful existence? When the story is presented without the filters of emotions and experiences is this not how a lot of people live because they fear that the alternative would be worse? I wouldn’t wish it on you. I wouldn’t wish it on my sister. And I wouldn’t wish it on my daughter. Even if society demands that you live with the entitled monsters that it has created, be strong enough to demand more. If man is a dog god alien, then it’s safe to say that you’re a dog god bitch of an alien. You are not less. You are never less. You’re only ever equal or better.

*kiss with a kick, is a triple entendre. In the original I made it kiss with a fist because that's the more conventional adage, but I really meant to write kiss with a kick. It could be a kiss with a an actual street fighter kick, a kiss with an extra sum sum kick, and the kick you do with one of your legs because that's what The Princess Diaries said you should do when the kiss was just too much.
Brief notes on the article:

When I wrote this one, I was writing some copy for a client. It was a little bit weird that I was writing two completely different things simultaneously. Who said men can't multi-task eh? Anyway, I was disturbed by the shocking number of "take care of your man" articles out there. I cannot fathom why a man is essential. Sometimes we make deals that are senseless. Yes, you have a husband but now you're depressed. Yes, everyone thinks you've got everything but you know you've got nothing. And then you'll die. That'll be it. There has to be more to life than walking on eggshells for the sake of someone else. So, I took all the advice I'd heard over the years, and I wrote it down. I stripped it down and presented it as I saw it. That's what I generally try to do on the blog. The result was caustic sarcasm that covered its ass. As a writer, you must cover your ass. It's particularly essential when you're dealing with controversial issues, that apply to so many people.

Mama Afam didn't like it. She thought it was too real. She said she knows too many people who lived like that to find it funny, no matter how ridiculous the writing got. I didn't want to stick the disclaimer on the end of it, at first. I thought my feminist credentials would show everyone that it was satirical, but my editors advised me to cover my ass, and so I did.

This one was very well received by the Bellanaijarians who read it all the way through. I did however enjoy some of the comments from the people that didn't.

Luis Garavito: Admitted to the rape and murder of 147 young boys.
Pedro Lopez: Accused of raping and killing over 300 girls across South America.
I quite liked this one. It made me laugh. Dog god alien fucker... it's very very very catchy.
Happy Days,
Afam

Onward and Upward!!

15:22:00
Friends, frenemies, enemies, frefoes, foes, comrades and famzers, we have come so monumentally far in such an unbelievably short period of time. You will no doubt be infinitely surprised that my ramblings have to date earned me thirty-two pounds and 43 pence. I'm sure that some of you will read this figure and giggle for it is so tiny that it is hardly worth boasting about. In fact you could go as far as to infer that he would boast of earning a mere £32 from 8 months of work must be mad. You would be right. I am mad.

When I first started this, my ramblings were for close friends and family but sometime in June I thought, "Why restrict the all the goodness that the ramblings of a madman holds to the minority?" It is common knowledge that mad men do not hide in corners and share the benefit of their madness with the rare few, they force their terminal inconsistencies on everyone and everything. Did Don Quixote not fight wage war against mills, trees and imagined enemies? In similar fashion I, Afam have conspired to force my ramblings down the throats of you all en masse. When I'm done with you, you will know of no other rambling madmen, rambling women or rambling men. When you hear rambling, you will think of me and only me because I Afam am a jealous man.

Just the other day, I purchased my domain name, so what was once http://www.theramblingsofamadman-afam.blogspot.com is now http://www.theramblingsofamadman-afam.com. I cannot tell you precisely why I did this. It felt like it was about time that I transcended blogspot.

A little bit before that, I signed on to be part of the blogging team at Alpha Rings, an awesome Australian online ring retailer. Check their blog out here: http://www.alpharings.com.au/blog/.

I will be working with Chris Gill (he's written for Drapers, and blogged for Reiss and Cocosa), Ty Henschke (he's a fashion designer for Calibre, a leading Australian menswear brand) and Nicholas Fox (the director of Alpha Rings and my boss). I'm probably just as terrified to be working with them as I am excited.

Onward and Upward my friends!

Happy Days,
Afam

Happy New Year from Afam and Captain Reginald!

18:15:00

Happy New Year. Yes, I am aware that it is now the 24th of January and as such 23 days late but you'll have to forgive me. After all I am Afam, Afam the Magnificent, the Clever, the Bold, the godly, the demi-god (Get creative with it. Any positive adjective will do. I'll even accept Afam the Ridiculous, because those who permit themselves to ridiculed in public do the world a service. They serve as the punching bags of the world.)

I'll be perfectly honest with you. I was delighted to see the back of 2012. My 2012 was just like the movie 2012. In 2012 I ran a little bit mad. I kid you not, I have a therapist, a killer prescription and everything. However I'm the sort of chap who'll look at the pieces of his life falling apart and say, "What a magnificent disaster! Do the pieces not fall beautifully?" there is beauty and delight to be had in everything. You need only aspire to see it.

I welcomed the new year as I've welcomed most other new years; deep in prayer at Church. It's a little bit of a Nigerian tradition. The last time I asked Papa Afam if I could party in the New Year, I was fixed with a look of such disdain and disbelief that I was rendered incapable of looking him in the eye for no fewer than three days. You mustn't think that I'm such a goody goody. I've had my crazy days.

What the future has in store for us I cannot tell. I can only hope that it's a better one than we can imagine. That even as the threads of our lives fray and come undone; even when all the shit in the world hits the proverbial fan, we'll find a large enough umbrella to shield us from the chaos.

Happy Present and Future Days,
Afam
