The Afam AMVCAs fashion Review

02:37:00
Hello. The AMVCAs were last week, and lots and lots of African stars went. Because I'm a little bit of a star myself albeit a Z lister I was there too. It is also important to mention that I, Afam, am an event whore. It's no biggie really. It's a way of life, you know? Being fabulously turned out while being fabulously broke! Can I get a holler? No? Okay. Thanks. Bye.

The second edition of the Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards was held at the Eko hotel Expo Centre in Lagos, last week and it was a success in every regard but the fashionable one. Of course, there were good bits, but these good bits were so few and far between that they found themselves somewhat overwhelmed by the awful, the terrible and the bizarre. I suppose one could say that there were very many stylish people in attendance, but that it is unfortunate that the trends (shockingly poor fabric, abysmal tailoring, and murderously questionable taste) were unforgiving. The question that’s on everyone’s lips is, are the AMVCAs really the African Oscars? In general, yes. They can boast of a quality that far outstrips any other event ever held in the country or even the continent. In terms of the fashion, I suppose they are after a fashion. Instead of competing viciously to end up in the list of the best dressed there’s an aggressive race to the bottom.

Of course, as always, the men had an easier time of it than the women. A well-cut tuxedo will always do the trick. But for the fairer sex things are usually a great deal trickier. The colour of the dress must match your skin tone; the dress must fit in all the right places; your make up must match the dress or at least your face; you must not over accessorize or under accessorize; and you must know how to pose in the dress. The thing that many do not realize is that a good photo in a bad dress is possible. If she slouches this way, or leans that way, the most hideous dress may gain the gravitas of the brilliant.

Many Nigerian designers, had clothes that walked down the red carpet, and this is a commendable thing. Mai Atafo Inspired was one of the more popular labels. For the most part Mai did a stunning job. Vimbai Mutinhiri and Ebuka Obi-Uchendu both looked brilliant in their tuxes. Women in suits were clearly a trend. Susan Peters rocked a floral jacket, black trousers and a bowl hair cut that I quite liked for its oddness. These women were probably inspired by Angelina Jolie at the Baftas or Ellen Degeneres at the Oscars

How stunning is Vimbai? Look at her! I mean look at her! Even Mama Afam commended her brilliant Mai Atafo inspired tuxedo!

Another trend was the abundance of sparkly dresses. Everywhere you turned there was the equivalent of a disco ball on a dress. This was particularly true where Gbemi is concerned. There is such a thing as too much silver. Genevieve Nnaji reigned it in a Jewel by Lisa ensemble that featured the egret print displayed in the Bicycle and Aprons collection and a mesh overlay that from the same collection. Seyi Shay also showed some reserve. She wore an Elizabeth Waldorf flapper inspired dress that alternated between silver sequined bands and fringes. However even though the dress was decent, the entire look was underwhelming.

Red was a common theme on the red carpet. Rita Dominic, Funlola AofiyebiRaimiBiola AlabiUche Jombo, Kate Henshaw and Makida Moka all turned up in red. Uche Jombo’s dress was unfortunate, as was Gina’s but Kate Henshaw, and Biola looked incredible. Biola’s dress featured laser cut outs, sheer panels and masterful draping. Gina’s dress on the other hand ended in an explosion of chiffon that made the whole ensemble made her a suitable candidate for psychiatric assessment in the Yaba mental hospital. The red lip was even more common than the red dress on the red carpet. However as far as beauty goes, I am of the opinion that the vast majority of attendees should consider beating their make up artists with a pestle. Is it not wickedness to let your client leave her house looking like a masquerade with unblended foundation?

With the hair most stars fell into two categories, the up do and the undone. The up dos sat tightly in buns, or half buns, and the undones mostly languished lazily and untidily in various marriages of bed head meets nasty weave. The up dos were both more common and more successful than the undonesYemi Alade’s hair was lovely. Her braids curled around the top of her head, and were vaguely reminiscent of a crown or a bird’s nest, and Eku Edewor let her well curled locks hang loosely around her face.

Among the men, an emerging theme was the untraditional lapel. IK and Noble Igwe utilized this to great effect. The vast majority went for the more traditional notched, peaked or shawl lapels.

What does this all mean? It means that more than half our celebrities and actors and actresses are hell bent on reliving their proms, and that we must not cease in our Christianly duty of criticism. We must whine and point and complain until they get it right.

Happy Days,
Afam

Hanging Backstage with Vimbai at the AMVCA rehearsals yesterday

13:38:00
OH MY GOD! You guys! Sorry about that. I'm channeling my inner white girl. And it isn't just any white girl, because believe it or not all white girls are not the same. Some are whiter than others. I don't know what I'm on about. Pay no attention to the beginning of this. I have a problem with beginnings. Nature abhors a vacuum so I just word chunder, you know?

So, by now, all of you should know what I've been doing this week. In addition to holding down a day job, blogging on bellanaija, writing for a bunch of other people, I've been hanging with Vimbai. I've seen so much of Vimbai, that I'm thinking of writing a book called my week with Vimbai.

It's been great fun, I can tell you that for free. I don't know why I used that expression, everything I tell you is for free. Anyway, it's been great fun so far. I've met so many people, and we've generally just had a blast! I'll be heading back to the secret but not so secret venue immediately after I finish this blogpost.

Anyway, here are some shots of Vimbai through out the day. I think I need to take more selfies and pictures with her. What do you reckon?

SELFIES ARE THE WAY!!!

Anyway, here are some shots of Vimbai at the rehearsals for the live show yesterday (Friday)
I adore this shot. I really do. It's unobvious and genuine. It's so endearing that I can feel my heart floating off to Vimbai's hotel room.

Here we've got lots of famous people and Vimbai. Vimbai is the most important one there, because she's the only one there that's scratched my back you know? She's brilliant! Whoop! Get in the mood people. Are you in the mood? Are you ? Are you? Are you? The other people in the shot are... Ozzy, Gbenro, Gideon, Ebuka, Jocelyn and ... I'm still pretty new, and I haven;t got a lot of time, so forgive me. You will won't you? Ozzy's actually a pretty stand up dude, even though he does have the tendency to be way too smooth on camera. He's a smooth operator... A smooth operator... HWe had a great chat last night. i think he may have been rehearsing for some future role because I sensed that he was actory acting. Or maybe that's just me. Don't trust my judgement. I'm not not insane.

How happy they all look. I cannot understand why anyone would want to get into a group shot with both Denrele and Vimbai. Sorry chaps, I'm kind of super not looking at you right now. Because I only have eyes for tha Vimbai. She so pretty! This must be getting overbearing, but you shall all bear me because I am Afam, and I am great.

Vimbai and Uti must be really good friends. Hmmm.

That's them again. I like the casual thing she's got going on. very chilled, and none stressy.

And he turns to the camera. I think he's tired of me. Is Uti Tired of me? I shall see tonight!!

Thank you God, and sweet Baby Jesus for allowing me to get this shot of Vimbai. Her smile, her teeth. Vimbai, please cut your hair and wear yellow. Please? Pretty please? Pleasest?

And another one. Gurr was just giving me life.

And that's all folks. Today and tomorrow will be AMVCA content deep. I will conquer the Instagram, the blogosphere, and Twitter, because I am Afam, and I am Legend.

Peace out!!

Happy Days,
Afam

Hanging with Vimbai on the Midday Oasis with Dotun and Temmilistic Temi

05:09:00

I could start this one by telling you of all the things that I did that morning, but I won't. Virginia Woolf's teaching me that in writing exclusion's twice as important as inclusion. If I were to include every tiny detail, then a great deal of the magic would be lost. It's a two way street this. You read my words, and they're meant to inspire something. I can't lead you all the way. You're the horse and I'm your rider. I've ridden you to the lake, but I can't force you drink of my waters. I do remain consoled by the fact that I've got a fairly good crop of readers. You don't demand the rigours of my toilet. You don't require the number of strokes it took to brush my teeth, or the number of minutes I spent in the shower before I felt clean.

Vimbai and I tumbled into the Cool Fm studio at about 10:45 in the morning. I was struck dumb. It wasn't that anything there was that incredible. I've been around for long enough that a few microphones and wires no longer fill me with childish excitement. It was that for the better part of my childhood I listened to cool fm almost exclusively. Of course the people I listened to aren't there anymore but that changed nothing. I was walking in history. I was seeing my story from a different angle. I was star struck, first by the building, and then, by the company I was keeping.

This is the only time in this blog post that I shall say that she's Zoolander good-looking. The next time I see her, I shall ask her to show me her own version of the blue steel, so that I can share it on my instagram. I'm an instavillain! I'm an instaho! Yeah boi! I would go on and on about how gorgeous she is, but compliments lose quality with frequency and after spending quality time with her, her precious looks have ceased to be her most endearing quality. I could talk now about her easy laugh, her wit, her give it to me straight attitude and her professionalism.
Err Maa Gerrd! I need to stahp it! Why so serious Afam!! Deep breaths. Deep breaths.

Now you're probably wondering why Vimbai was at the Cool Fm studio. She could have been doing an Ellen. You know? She could have been going around distributing pizza to the people that worked there. It's possible isn't it? I even have a picture that would imply it.

Hunny in black just had a foodgasm! Yes! This is food porn! Her head was telling her no, but her stomach, her tummy, was telling her yes. After she got a bite of that pizza, she collapsed. If you ever wondered what they do behind the scenes at Cool fm/ Wazobia fm, I get the distinct impression that it's things of this calibre. The lady in pink is Lo Lo! She is a hoot. There's no other word for it.
As fun as that would have been that's not why Vimbai was there. She was there for an interview with Dotun and Temilistic Temi on their midday Oasis show that runs between 10am and 3pm every weekday. A lot of it was about the AMVCA's because they're tomorrow, and a fair bit was about Vimbai's personal life. Somewhere in this blog post I, Afam, the first on the scene will reveal Vimbai's answer to the do I have a boyfriend question.

This is Temi. She's a laugh. I find it incredibly difficult to not call her Temmilistic Temi. I don't even know what Temmilistic means?! Nobody knows what it means! But it's not provocative. It's funny and weird and good, and it makes me feel good inside. Can I be Temmilistic Afam? Or would have to be Afammistic Afam. I quite like that one. I think I might keep it. #stylejocking
Temi runs a parenting blog

And this here is Dotun. The way Vimbai pronounces it is totes adorable. She pronounces it like it's Doe-tun, not Dot-un. So now I pronounce it the same way because her way is way cooler. Dotun has a new television show on Sound City.

This obviously them in the studio and these are the facial expressions they make. I kid you not. The guy at the back is the social media guy. If cool fm retweets a tweet that you tweeted, chances are it was him that did it. Is that sentence a tongue twister? Because it twisted my brain.

As you can see they're all cut from the same cloth, so they got on really well.
They asked her a bunch of questions like,

Enter Dotun, Temmilistic Temi and Vimbai

Dotun: So Vimbai, are you single? Are you with someone? What's the sitch? Break it down for us yo!

Temmilistic Temi: Yeah Vimbai! Our listeners are super keen on deets like this. I bet the bloggers are going mental!

Vimbai:

Dotun: Temi, I don't think she's gonna answer that one.

Temi: Well, you can't have everything but it's my turn. Vimbai, how excited are you about hosting the AMVCA's for the second time? Congratulations by the way!

Vimbai:

AHHHHHHH!!! So stoked! So stoked! So stoked! Err Maa Gerrd!!! Call the police! Asi Mwari Ka!! (That's Oh my God in Shona, one of Zimbabwe's official languages)
Vimbai's a Zimbabwean who lives in South Africa. Get with the program yo!

Doods! I cannot! I cannot! There's so much work to do. We're not going to sleep until we're ready to be epic!! And we're going to break Ellen's Oscar selfie retweet record. I SAY WE ARE GOING TO BREAK THAT RECORD.

Because Africa is great, and lovely, and amazing. And all of us are beautiful. And I just want to thank God and errbody.
Dotun: So what song are you into at the minute Vimbai?

Vimbai: Jaiye Jaiye, by Wizkid and Femi Kuti does things to me.

It does. It's her ring tone.

Temi: How about Rands and Nairas by Emmy Gee featuring AB Crazy and DJ Dimples

Vimbai: I love that song. It's literally my life, because I shuffle between South Africa and Nigeria so much.

Dotun: Well we're going to play it for you.

Vimbai:
Whooop! Whooop! Whooop!

And now you know what happens when you play Rands and Nairas and Vimbai's in the room.

The end.

Towards the end of the interview, they let me come on air for a bit. I very nearly died. So thanks Dotun, and Temilistic Temi, for attempted murder. I kid. I kid. It meant a lot, because they didn't have to.

I really like this one. She's got artificial wind in her hair. It looks like it's coming from my mouth. YOLO. And Dotun looks like a serial killer. #justsaying

So much denim!

Happy Days,
Afam

I hopped on a danfo, then I met Vimbai again and got a new gig

14:58:00
Hi GUYS!!!!!! I'm totes excited today. That's why the greeting is so enthusiastic. Enthusiasm is a great thing. I shall never ever curb my enthusiasm. That last sentence gave me the giggles. There's this American television show called curb your enthusiasm, so it was fun to stick it in. I told you about that because there's no fun in making a reference and letting it fly over the heads of the masses.

Things have been a little bit difficult lately in Nigeria and Lagos lately. The difficulty isn't anything new though. Everyday here is a hustle. Come rain or sunshine Lagos will go on. That's why this fuel scarcity is so annoying. In any other city in the world, if there was a fuel scarcity, people would stay home and sleep. But in Lagos, we hobble on. We complain about it, but we don't stop.

In other news, I haven't been sleeping very well. Papa Afam is on a war path and his path has got my name on it. The reason for this is Papa Afam's selective hearing.

Enter Papa Afam and Afam…  (You can call me Bewbew too)

Papa Afam: So Afam, my dear chap, what is it that you want to do for a living? You can't let the year go to waste you know?

Afam: Well father, jewel of my heart, proverbial god of small things, I want to continue with the writing and the blog. I'm rather good at it. It would be great to see where it takes me.

Papa Afam: You've always been interested in Development. You should work with the government. The government's doing great things. Yes!

Afam: Say what?

Papa Afam: What is it Afam? Are you not interested in Development?

Afam; Yes but?

Papa Afam: That's everything settled then. Maybe after a long illustrious career as a government man you'll write a book about it.

Afam: But dad!

Papa Afam: Yes! call this fellow, and that fellow. They'll be your mentors.

Exit. Stage left.

So I'm not quite in the department he had in mind, and he's worried that I am wasting the year. So I'm worried that I'm wasting the year. I suppose I should have fought harder to be in the department he had in mind, but I've only got so much fight left to spare... I shall try harder. I shall try harder tomorrow. He's old and he's wise. He knows what he's going on about. We'll be alright. I know we will.

That was a digression and a half.

Anyway, because of the fuel scarcity I didn't have any petrol yesterday but I still had to get around. Can you imagine the quagmire I was in. I'm an ajebo, a spoiled brat. I don't use public transport. I find taxis detestable. I had to google maps my way to the Ikeja Local Government office for Community Development. If I was in Papa Afam's good books, I'd have said, "Papa Afam, please can you lend me your car and driver?" and he might have said yes. But as I'm quite firmly in the black, and the thing I had to get to was a blog related meeting with Vimbai Mutinhinri, I shut my damn mouth and hopped on a danfo. Can you believe it? Me, Afam, the decadent, on one of these?

picture nicked from naij.com

What? What? You don't believe me?

I took pictures.

That nike hat's my new favourite hat. Yay me. It's just a phase. I'll return to my modern fisherman of the city ways soon enough. It really wasn't that bad. I didn't get robbed or anything. I'll probably have to do it again, and I don't mind. I was a little bit scared, and the peeps in the bus could have done with some industrial grade air freshener but apart from that everything was alrighty.

And that's the Lekki Phase 1 round about. The bus driver was like, "Get ready, pop it, let's go." And I screamed, "Enter Galactic you and me baby!!!"

One more shot of the Danfo.

So why was I meeting up with Vimbai, the host of the Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards, the Cohost of Star Gist, and the ex big brother housemate? Well, it's a partnership. I'll be bringing you the behind the scenes and on the scene action during the build up to the Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards (basically the African Oscars u kno? u kno?) from Vimbai's point of view! How awesome is that? I'm so excited I can't handle it!! I just can't. I may even get to meet Desmond Elliot. If I meet Desmond Elliot I shall spontaneously combust and die.

Desmond Elliot is a Nollywood star. He is second to none. Do not even argue with me. I'll slap you through the internet. #internetslaps.

I first met Vimbai at the Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards Nominations Party, and she's kind of fun, kind of quirky, super good at her job, and great! Yes, I mean that. I would say the same thing in court.

This is how she looked on the night that we met. She's lovely is she not? Lady in red… you know the rest of the song.
Anyway, this is how she looked Yesterday…

I like this picture. Before I took it, I said to her, "you know I'm gonna have to get dat pisho right?" And then she burst into laughter and said, "You are a great man!" After looking to the heavens while the sunlight kissed my neither dark skinned nor light skinned skin I said, "I know V… I know..."
The End.

Happy Days,
Afam
